The Importance of La Dieta for Ayahuasca Retreats at Sacred Vine Church: Preparing Body, Mind, and Spirit
At Sacred Vine Church, we honor the sacred traditions of ayahuasca as a profound tool for healing, spiritual growth, and reconnection with the divine. Our ceremonies are held in a container of prayer, integrity, and deep respect for the medicine and its indigenous lineage. One of the most powerful ways to prepare for and integrate this sacred work is through la dieta — the traditional dietary and lifestyle restrictions that have supported plant medicine journeys for generations. La dieta is far more than a set of rules. It is an act of devotion and purification that creates the clearest possible vessel for the sacred vine to work within you. By committing to this practice, participants at Sacred Vine Church often experience smoother ceremonies, deeper insights, and more lasting transformation.
What Is La Dieta at Sacred Vine Church?
La dieta involves following a clean, simple, and light diet in the days and weeks surrounding your ayahuasca ceremony. The goal is to reduce physical and energetic “noise” so the medicine can meet you with greater clarity and power. We generally recommend beginning preparation at least two weeks before your retreat and continuing supportive practices for at least one week after. The emphasis is on light, whole foods with minimal salt, sugar, fat, and no strong spices.
Key items to avoid include:
Pork and red meat (these are considered especially heavy and are strictly avoided)
Alcohol, caffeine, and all recreational substances
Processed foods, refined sugars, and junk food
Strong spices, garlic, and excessive salt
Fermented foods and certain aged or overripe items (for safety with the MAOI properties of ayahuasca)
In the days leading in, many also reduce or abstain from sexual activity, including masturbation, and limit exposure to strong scents or synthetic products
What to enjoy instead: Fresh vegetables, root vegetables (such as yucca, potato, or sweet potato), rice, plantains, simple grains, vegetable soups or broths, and lighter proteins like chicken or fish if needed. Meals are best kept simple and easy to digest.
On the day of ceremony, we advise very light eating — often raw vegetables, vegetable soups, or minimal portions — to keep the body calm and receptive.
Why La Dieta Matters So Deeply at Sacred Vine Church
Following the dieta supports your journey in several important ways:
Safety and Respect for the Medicine - Ayahuasca works with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Avoiding tyramine-rich foods helps prevent uncomfortable or potentially serious interactions. This alignment of traditional wisdom and practical safety is a cornerstone of responsible practice at Sacred Vine Church.
Lighter Physical Experience - A cleaner system often means the medicine spends less energy on physical purging and more on the emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing you came for. Many of our participants report gentler ceremonies and clearer visions when they prepare diligently.
Heightened Sensitivity and Connection - By stepping away from stimulants, heavy foods, and distractions, your nervous system quiets and your energetic field becomes more open. This allows you to hear the icaros (healing songs), feel the presence of the sacred vine, and receive its teachings with greater depth.
Spiritual Commitment and Devotion - In the Amazonian traditions we honor, la dieta is a form of prayer and respect. It signals to the plant spirits that you are serious about the work. This commitment helps foster a harmonious relationship with the medicine and often leads to more profound ceremonial experiences.
Stronger Integration - Continuing lighter eating and mindful practices after the ceremony helps the insights and healing settle into your daily life, supporting longer-term transformation.
A Holistic Approach
While food is central, la dieta at Sacred Vine Church also invites a broader lifestyle shift: quieter reflection, reduced media consumption, and a gentle turning inward. These elements together help create a sacred container — both within you and in our ceremonial space. We encourage participants to approach the dieta with sincerity rather than perfection. A small accidental slip (such as a bit of extra salt) is rarely an issue if your overall intention and preparation are strong. Use common sense, and always follow the specific preparation guidelines provided for your retreat.
Embrace the Preparation as Part of the Journey
At Sacred Vine Church, we see la dieta not as deprivation, but as a beautiful opportunity for self-care and alignment. It is an investment in the quality of your experience and the depth of your healing.
If you feel the call of the sacred vine, know that your preparation is a meaningful part of the path. A committed dieta helps create the conditions for the medicine to work with greater love, clarity, and power — exactly as we intend in every ceremony we hold.
We look forward to welcoming you into sacred ceremony with an open heart and a prepared vessel. May the vine guide you home to yourself.
With Love,
The Sacred Vine Church Family
